Now you can perform tests in the field with plant material, on trucks, at the elevator and on barges all within 3-5 minutes. These simple proven test strips can help mange risk and certify purity from the breeder, grower or shipper and prevent contamination from bin to bin. These tests give a simple pass/fail result with an accuracy of 0.1% with 96% confidence, 0.2% with 99% confidence on Roundup Ready ® crops. The test works by detecting the CP4 EPSPS protein produced by a gene, which has been incorporated into Roundup Ready ® soybeans. Simply place leaf tissue or cracked seed in to the tube, add the buffer solution, dip the test strip and within minutes get yes or no result. A single reddish line on the test strip indicates a negative result and two reddish lines indicate a positive result.

Tests performed on grain are completed using representative samples of the whole lot. As with all good sampling procedures, the user must take representative samples and divide down to a workable sample size. The sample is put through a blender, sold below. The test is then completed on the homogenized sample. Minimum sample is 100 grams.

Trait detects Bt, a protein expressed by the Cry1Ab gene, in Novartis YieldGard ® (Bt11 Event), Monsanto YieldGard ® (MON810 Event), and Novartis Knockout ® (Event 176). The test results are obtained in 5-8 minutes.

Samples used for the Bt1 Corn Grain Test Kit can be sub-samples of representative samples collected from trucks, railcars, barges etc. for moisture, test weight, or dockage tests. The size of the sub-samples to be used will depend on the percent Bt screening level and an acceptable level of risk that the Bt level is close to the screening level. Sample size is dependent upon kernel weight and kernel count as described in the instructions included with the kit.

The sample is processed in a blender using a small Mason type jar with a grinding time of 10-15 seconds on high speed. The sample is then mixed with tap water and a concentrated buffer solution (included) until the entire sample is well wetted. With a wooden spatula, a sample cup is filled and leveled off. The Trait Test Strip is pushed down into the cup and sits for between 5-8 minutes, until the control (top line) is clearly visible. If the sample is Bt positive, two red lines will appear on the test strip. It is suggested that a 20% dilution of household bleach be used to clean jars and blender blades between tests (not included.)  Enough supplies for 100 tests are included; buffer solution, wooden spatulas, sample cups, and test strips.
